Summer Palace Beijing Guide
The Summer Palace is a half-day Beijing plan, not a quick photo stop. Use Subway Line 4 to Beigongmen for the North Palace Gate, then choose a lake-and-hill route that matches your energy.
Quick Answer
- Address reference: No.23 Gongmen Qianjie, Haidian District, Beijing.
- Best public route: Beijing Subway Line 4 to Beigongmen Station, Exit D, then walk to the North Palace Gate.
- Best first route: North Palace Gate -> Longevity Hill area -> Long Corridor -> Kunming Lake edge -> Seventeen-Arch Bridge or boat option if running.
- Book/check first: official reservation channel, ticket type, ID/passport requirement, and current boat operation if you want a lake ride.
Route Choices
| Route | Use it when | Watch out |
|---|---|---|
| North Gate to lake route | You arrive by Line 4 and want the simplest subway plan. | Some uphill walking at the start. |
| East Gate / New Palace Gate route | You use taxi/Didi or a private guide. | Traffic and pickup points can be slower on holidays. |
| Boat-and-lake route | Weather is clear and boat services are operating. | Seasonal changes, wind, queues, and ticketing rules. |
Half-Day Plan
- Arrive at Beigongmen by subway or taxi before the main midday rush.
- Enter through the North Palace Gate and climb/walk through the Longevity Hill area.
- Descend toward the Long Corridor and Kunming Lake edge.
- If you have time, continue toward Seventeen-Arch Bridge or take a boat if current operations allow it.
- Leave by the gate that gives the easiest taxi/subway route back to your hotel. Do not force a full loop if you are tired.
Pairing Logic
- Good same day: Peking University / Haidian cafe stop, a relaxed dinner, or a light museum plan.
- Bad same day: Great Wall, Forbidden City, or a long rail departure.
- Family note: use taxi/Didi on the return if children or older travelers are tired after the lake walk.
