Yu Garden Shanghai Guide

Yu Garden works best as an old-city half-day: garden first, bazaar second, then walk or taxi toward the Bund. The biggest mistake is treating the free commercial area and the ticketed garden as the same thing.

Suggested time: 2-4 hours Nearest metro: Yuyuan Garden Pairs with: The Bund

Quick Answer

Garden vs Bazaar

AreaWhat it isPlanning note
Yu Garden Ticketed classical garden with pavilions, rocks, water features and dense paths. Go earlier if you want quieter photos and easier movement.
Yuyuan Bazaar / City God Temple area Commercial streets, snacks, shops and night lights around the garden. Can be enjoyable at night, but it is crowded and not the same as entering the garden.
The Bund Shanghai's waterfront architectural route. Pair after Yu Garden by walking if energy/weather allows, or use taxi/Didi.

Half-Day Route

  1. Arrive by metro at Yuyuan Garden Station and save the station name in Chinese: 豫园站.
  2. Enter the ticketed garden first if it is open and you want the classical garden experience.
  3. After the garden, move slowly through the bazaar lanes; keep valuables secure in crowds.
  4. Use the old-city stop as lunch/snack time, not as a serious fine-dining plan.
  5. Continue to the Bund for late afternoon or evening skyline timing.
