Lijiang and Dali Travel Guide
Lijiang and Dali are best treated as a Yunnan loop: Dali for lake, Bai culture and slower days; Lijiang for old town, Naxi culture and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Do not rush both into a 2-night checklist.
Quick Answer
- Best route: Kunming -> Dali -> Lijiang -> optional Shangri-La, or fly into Dali/Lijiang and keep the route one-way.
- Best first bases: Dali Old Town or west Erhai side; Lijiang Old Town for convenience, Shuhe/Baisha for calmer stays.
- Book first: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain cableway/tour if it is a must-do, then rail/flight timing.
- Transport style: high-speed rail between Kunming, Dali and Lijiang; local car/taxi for lake and mountain days.
Arrival And Rail Logic
| Route | Best use | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Kunming -> Dali | Classic Yunnan entry route. | High-speed rail is practical; Dali Railway Station is in the modern Xiaguan area, not inside Dali Old Town. |
| Dali -> Lijiang | Natural next step after Erhai and Dali Old Town. | Use rail or car transfer depending on hotel location and luggage. |
| Lijiang -> Shangri-La | Optional extension for a longer Yunnan route. | Altitude rises; add buffer and avoid rushing straight from sea-level China. |
Where To Stay
- Dali Old Town: best for first-timers, food, cafes, city gates and easy pickups.
- Xizhou / west Erhai: quieter village and lake-side experience; better if you want slower scenery.
- Lijiang Old Town: most convenient for food and sightseeing, but can be busy.
- Shuhe or Baisha: calmer Lijiang bases, useful if you want mountain views and less crowd pressure.
5-Day Route
Day 1: Arrive Dali
Transfer from Dali station/airport to Dali Old Town, walk the old city, and keep dinner local. Do not schedule a full Erhai loop after arrival.
Day 2: Erhai + Xizhou
Use a car, driver, bike-friendly section, or carefully planned lake route. Prioritize Xizhou, lake views, and one slow meal instead of trying to circle everything.
Day 3: Dali -> Lijiang
Travel to Lijiang, check into Old Town, Shuhe or Baisha, then walk at dusk. Save heavy mountain plans for the next day.
Day 4: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
Use a tour or driver if you are unfamiliar with ticketing and cableway timing. Add Blue Moon Valley if the current route allows. Bring warm layers and take altitude seriously.
Day 5: Baisha / Shuhe / Black Dragon Pool
Use a slower culture day after the mountain: Baisha murals/streets, Shuhe, Black Dragon Pool, or cafes with mountain views.
Altitude And Weather Notes
- Lijiang is higher than most first China cities; avoid intense activity on arrival if you feel unwell.
- Jade Dragon Snow Mountain requires warm clothing even when the old town feels mild.
- Mountain visibility changes quickly; build a backup old-town or village day.
- Do not combine a rushed mountain day with a long train or flight unless you accept risk.
Food Route
Dali is strong for Bai-style food, Xizhou baba, mushrooms in season, and cafe culture. Lijiang is better for Naxi-style dishes, hotpot-style meals, bakery/cafe breaks, and village-area slow dining. Avoid over-scheduling food markets before high-altitude travel.
Season And Budget
- Best months: March-May and September-November.
- Watch out: summer rain, holiday crowds, altitude, and mountain ticket/cableway availability.
- Daily budget: CNY 550-1,500 per person mid-range; add more for private drivers and mountain tours.
