For a first China trip, Beijing plus Shanghai is easier to execute than chasing too many cities. This route gives you imperial history, the Great Wall, high-speed rail, modern Shanghai, and one optional day trip.

When To Modify This Route
- Add Xi'an if you have 9-10 days and want deeper history.
- Add Chengdu if pandas and food matter more than Shanghai day trips.
- Skip the day trip if jet lag, weather or budget becomes stressful.
- Do not add Zhangjiajie to a 7-day Beijing-Shanghai route unless you remove major city time.
