Alipay for Foreigners: China Travel Payment Guide

Mobile payment is one of the biggest differences between traveling in China and traveling in many other countries. Set it up before you need it.

Quick Answer

Foreign visitors should install Alipay before departure, add a supported overseas bank card, complete any identity checks, and keep a backup payment method. Do not wait until the taxi, restaurant, or train station payment screen to test it.

Setup Checklist

  1. Install the official Alipay app and register with a phone number you can still receive SMS on while traveling.
  2. Add a Visa, Mastercard, or other supported overseas card shown in the app.
  3. Complete passport or identity verification if prompted.
  4. Enable overseas transactions with your issuing bank before departure.
  5. After arrival, test a small purchase at a convenience store before relying on Alipay for taxis, hotels, or attractions.

Common Problems

Backup Plan

Set up WeChat Pay too, carry a small amount of RMB cash, and keep one physical card available for hotels, airports, and large merchants. China is convenient once mobile payment works, but the first failed QR payment feels much worse if you have no backup.

Best future offers: travel debit cards, eSIM packages, airport transfers, and first-day China setup checklists. Avoid promising that a specific card will always work.
