China Food Routes by City
Food pages should be route-based, not just dish lists. A foreign visitor needs to know which area to eat in after the attraction, when to avoid heavy meals, and what backup exists if spice or crowds become too much.
City Food Routes
| City | Route | Use this after... | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beijing | Wangfujing/Qianmen duck, Gulou noodles/cafes, Sanlitun modern dinner. | Forbidden City or hutongs. | Keep Great Wall dinner flexible. |
| Shanghai | Yu Garden snacks, People's Square dumplings, Jing'an/Xintiandi dinner. | Bund or old city walks. | Weather decides whether skyline dining is worth it. |
| Xi'an | Muslim Quarter/Drum Tower route: roujiamo, biangbiang noodles, paomo, skewers. | City wall or Bell Tower. | Avoid before early long trains if sensitive. |
| Chengdu | Wenshu snacks/teahouse, Taikoo Li dinner, one planned hotpot night. | Panda base morning. | Pace spice across the trip. |
| Guilin/Yangshuo | Yangshuo town dinner, Yulong River hotel meal, Guilin rice noodles on transfer days. | River days. | Choose location over viral restaurants. |
| Hangzhou/Suzhou | West Lake tea/cafe, Hangzhou local dinner, Suzhou old-city snacks near Pingjiang Road. | Lake or garden routes. | Rainy days suit slower meals. |
| Xiamen | Zhongshan Road snacks, old port seafood, Shapowei cafes. | Gulangyu ferry day. | Seafood freshness and crowds matter. |
| Lijiang/Dali | Dali Bai food/Xizhou baba, Lijiang Naxi dishes, cafe breaks in Shuhe/Baisha. | Old town and lake days. | Eat lighter before altitude/mountain days. |
| Harbin | Central Street warm breaks, dumplings/stews, Russian-influenced bread/pastries. | Winter walks. | Food stops are cold-recovery stops. |
| Chongqing | Jiefangbei snacks, one serious hotpot, non-spicy breakfast backup. | Hongya Cave or Liziba day. | Do not schedule hotpot before a long train day. |
