China High-Speed Rail Route Comparison
Use this page to decide when trains beat flights. Times below are practical planning ranges, not fixed promises. Always confirm the exact train, station, price, and passport name on 12306 or your booking partner before payment.
Quick Rules
- Use rail when the city pair is about 2-6 hours by high-speed train.
- Arrive at large stations 45-60 minutes early; add more time if you need ticket-window help.
- Bring the original passport used for booking. Name order must match the booking.
- Do not assume every city has one station. Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Hangzhou and Chengdu each have multiple rail stations.
Useful Route Table
| Route | Typical fast train time | Best station logic | Use case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beijing -> Shanghai | About 4.5-6 hours | Beijing South to Shanghai Hongqiao is the usual HSR pair. | Often easier than flying once airport time is included. |
| Beijing -> Xi'an | About 4.5-6 hours | Beijing West or Beijing South to Xi'an North, depending on train. | Strong history route: capital plus Terracotta Warriors. |
| Shanghai -> Hangzhou | About 45-75 minutes | Shanghai Hongqiao to Hangzhou East is frequent; Hangzhou Station is closer to West Lake when available. | Best first day trip from Shanghai. |
| Shanghai -> Suzhou | About 25-45 minutes | Shanghai or Shanghai Hongqiao to Suzhou Railway Station is convenient for old-city gardens. | Easy garden and canal day trip. |
| Xi'an -> Chengdu | About 3.5-4.5 hours | Xi'an North to Chengdu East is the practical pair. | Good 7-10 day route: history plus pandas and food. |
| Guangzhou/Shenzhen -> Guilin | About 3-4 hours | Check whether the train arrives Guilin, Guilin North, or Guilin West. | South China nature add-on. |
| Shanghai -> Zhangjiajie | Often flight is simpler; rail can be long or require transfers. | Check Zhangjiajie West if using HSR. | Choose rail only if the schedule is clean; otherwise fly. |
Foreign Traveler Booking Notes
China Railway uses real-name ticketing. Foreign travelers can use passports for online booking and identity verification on the 12306 English website or app. If online verification fails, go to a staffed railway ticket office with your passport.
For affiliate testing, this page is a strong slot for a simple comparison widget: official 12306 for lowest direct ticketing versus an English OTA for support, reminders, and easier foreign-card checkout.
Booking Slot
Insert train booking partner module here: route search, passport-name reminder, station-name warning, and a note that exact prices and schedules change.
