Beijing Travel Guide for First-Time Visitors
Beijing is the best first stop for imperial history, the Great Wall, museums, and high-speed rail. Plan it around two fixed items: Forbidden City reservations and your Great Wall day.
Quick Answer
- Best first hotel area: Wangfujing or Dongcheng for central sightseeing; Qianmen for old Beijing atmosphere; Sanlitun for nightlife and embassies.
- Do not skip: Forbidden City, Jingshan Park, Temple of Heaven, one Great Wall section.
- Book first: Forbidden City ticket/reservation with passport, then Great Wall transport or tour.
- Transport style: subway for city sights, Didi/taxi for luggage and late nights, private transfer or tour for the Great Wall if you want low stress.
Airport To City
| Arrival | Best public route | When to use taxi / Didi |
|---|---|---|
| Beijing Capital Airport (PEK) | Capital Airport Express to Sanyuanqiao or Dongzhimen, then subway or taxi to your hotel. | Late arrival, heavy luggage, family travel, or hotel far from the express line. |
| Beijing Daxing Airport (PKX) | Daxing Airport Express to Caoqiao, then transfer or taxi. The express line is designed for fast airport-city movement. | If your hotel is far north/east, a direct car may be easier after a long flight. |
Always confirm your airport code before booking a hotel transfer. PEK and PKX are on different sides of Beijing, so choosing the wrong airport in a plan can add a long cross-city transfer.
Where To Stay
| Area | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Wangfujing / Dongdan | First-timers who want central hotels, subway access, shopping, and easy taxi pickups. | Less local feeling than hutong areas. |
| Qianmen | Tiananmen, hutong walks, Temple of Heaven, old-city atmosphere. | Security zones and crowds can slow movement around Tiananmen. |
| Dongcheng / Gulou | Hutongs, cafes, drum tower walks, slower evenings. | Some hotels are smaller; check taxi access. |
| Sanlitun | Nightlife, restaurants, embassy area, western food backup. | Farther from the Forbidden City and Qianmen. |
3-Day First Beijing Route
Day 1: Arrival + Old City Light Walk
Check in, set up Alipay/WeChat Pay, then do Wangfujing or Qianmen in the evening. Keep this day low-pressure because international arrivals can be slow.
Day 2: Tiananmen Area + Forbidden City + Jingshan
Enter the Palace Museum through the Meridian Gate on the south side. Walk north along the central axis, exit near the north side, then climb Jingshan Park for the classic Forbidden City view if weather and energy allow.
Day 3: Great Wall Day
Choose Mutianyu for a calmer first visit and easier cable-car logistics, or Badaling for the most famous and heavily serviced option. Do not combine a serious Great Wall day with a major museum day.
Forbidden City Rules That Matter
- Book before arrival; same-day tickets are not the normal plan.
- Use the same passport for booking and entry, and bring the original passport.
- The official visitor policy says entry is through the Meridian Gate, the south gate of the Forbidden City.
- The Palace Museum is usually closed on Mondays except national holidays; verify before building your itinerary.
Food Route
For a simple first trip, use food by area instead of chasing one viral restaurant. Try Peking duck near Wangfujing or Qianmen, hutong cafes and noodles around Gulou, and a hotpot or modern Chinese dinner around Sanlitun. Keep one dinner flexible after the Great Wall because return traffic can be unpredictable.
