Xi'an Travel Guide for First-Time Visitors

Xi'an is the cleanest history stop in a first China route. The key is to treat the Terracotta Warriors as an out-of-city half-day to full-day plan, not a quick museum stop.

Suggested stay: 2-3 nights Best base: Bell Tower / South Gate Main rail: Xi'an North

Quick Answer

Arrival And Stations

Terracotta Warriors Plan

The Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum is in Lintong District, outside central Xi'an. Plan it as a half-day to full-day trip.

  1. Start early from Bell Tower / South Gate or Xi'an North if arriving by train.
  2. Use a private transfer, guided day tour, or official/clearly mapped public route. For first-time foreign visitors, transfer or tour is simpler.
  3. Visit the main pits first, then the museum areas if energy allows.
  4. Keep your passport ready for ticket verification.
  5. Do not schedule a tight long-distance train immediately after the visit.

2-Day Xi'an Route

Day 1: City Wall + Bell Tower + Muslim Quarter

Arrive, check in near Bell Tower or South Gate, walk or cycle part of the city wall, then eat through the Muslim Quarter area in the evening. Avoid carrying luggage into the food streets.

Day 2: Terracotta Warriors + Big Wild Goose Pagoda

Morning to early afternoon at the Terracotta Warriors. Return to the city for Big Wild Goose Pagoda or a quieter dinner depending on energy.

Food Route

Xi'an food is route-friendly: roujiamo, biangbiang noodles, lamb or beef paomo, skewers and persimmon cakes around the Muslim Quarter / Drum Tower area. Go hungry, bring cash backup, and avoid scheduling this right before a long early train if your stomach is sensitive.
