Xi'an Travel Guide for First-Time Visitors
Xi'an is the easiest way to add deep history to a first China trip. Come for the Terracotta Warriors, but leave time for the city wall, food streets, and slower old-city rhythm.
Best For
- Terracotta Warriors and Qin dynasty history.
- Ancient city wall cycling or walking.
- Food streets, noodles, dumplings, and Muslim Quarter snacks.
- Adding a 2-3 day history stop between Beijing, Shanghai, or Chengdu.
Suggested Stay
Stay 2-3 nights. One full day goes to the Terracotta Warriors and Huaqing Palace or another nearby stop. One day stays inside the city for the wall, Bell Tower area, museums, and food.
Where To Stay
- Bell Tower / Drum Tower: best first-trip area for food and old-city access.
- South Gate: good for the city wall and a calmer hotel base.
- Xi'an North Railway Station: practical only for one-night rail transfers.
Must-Plan Item: Terracotta Warriors
The Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum is outside the central city, so treat it as a half-day to full-day plan. Bring the same passport used for ticket booking and do not assume a phone photo of the passport will be enough.
