Chengdu Travel Guide for First-Time Visitors
Chengdu works best when you do the pandas early, keep one food-and-tea day slow, and use high-speed rail or a tour for Leshan, Emei, Qingcheng or Dujiangyan.

Arrival And City Transport
- Airport: Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU) handles many newer long-haul and domestic flights; Chengdu Shuangliu (CTU) is closer to the old city but has fewer international options. Check the airport code carefully.
- Rail: Chengdu East Railway Station is the most useful high-speed rail hub for Xi'an, Chongqing, Leshan and many Sichuan routes.
- Metro: use metro for city movement; use Didi/taxi when going to the panda base very early or after late hotpot.
- Chinese address backup: save hotel, panda base, and Chengdu East Railway Station in Chinese before departure.

Panda Base Plan
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is at 1375 Panda Avenue, Chenghua District. Go early because pandas are usually more active in cooler morning hours, and crowds build later.
- Leave the hotel early. If using metro, route toward Panda Avenue and use a short taxi/shuttle connection if needed.
- Prioritize the panda areas first, following the current park map and staff instructions.
- Keep 3-4 hours for the visit; do not schedule Leshan on the same morning.
- Bring passport, payment app, water, and patience for crowd control.
3-Day Chengdu Route
Day 1: Arrival + Taikoo Li / Chunxi Road
Check in, test payment apps, eat near the hotel, and keep the evening simple.
Day 2: Pandas + Wenshu + Hotpot
Morning panda base, afternoon Wenshu Monastery area and teahouse, evening hotpot. This is the strongest first-time Chengdu day.
Day 3: Leshan / Dujiangyan / City Food Day
Choose one: Leshan Giant Buddha by rail/tour, Dujiangyan and Qingcheng, or a relaxed city day with People's Park, Kuanzhai Alley and food exploration.
Food Route
Use food in stages: simple noodles or dumplings for breakfast, teahouse snacks near Wenshu or People's Park, hotpot at night, and a non-spicy backup meal the next day. Sichuan food is the attraction; do not schedule multiple spicy meals before a long train day.
