Hangzhou and Suzhou Travel Guide
Hangzhou and Suzhou are the best soft add-ons to Shanghai. Use high-speed rail, choose one main scenic focus per day, and avoid trying to see both cities fully in one rushed day.
Quick Answer
- Hangzhou: choose West Lake first, then Longjing tea area if time allows.
- Suzhou: choose one major garden, Suzhou Museum / old street area, then a canal walk.
- Best station logic: Shanghai Hongqiao has frequent trains; Suzhou Railway Station is convenient for old-city gardens; Hangzhou East is frequent, while Hangzhou Station can be closer to West Lake when available.
- Do not do: Hangzhou and Suzhou as a complete two-city tour in one day.
High-Speed Rail Plan
| Route | Typical time | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Shanghai -> Hangzhou | About 45-75 minutes by fast train | West Lake day trip or one-night city break. |
| Shanghai -> Suzhou | About 25-45 minutes by fast train | Garden and canal day trip. |
| Hangzhou -> Suzhou | Often 1.5-2.5 hours depending on train and station | Useful for a 3-day Shanghai-Hangzhou-Suzhou loop. |
Hangzhou West Lake Route
- Arrive by train, then metro/taxi toward the West Lake east side. Longxiangqiao is a practical lakeside metro reference point.
- Walk the east/north lake edge first for an easy first impression.
- If weather is clear, add a boat or causeway walk; if rainy, use cafes, museums or tea-house time.
- Add Longjing / Meijiawu tea area only if you have enough afternoon time and a clear return plan.
- Return to the correct rail station with buffer time; Hangzhou has multiple stations.
Suzhou Garden Route
- Arrive at Suzhou Railway Station if possible for old-city access.
- Start with Humble Administrator's Garden at No.178 Dongbei Street, Gusu District, or another major garden with current ticket availability.
- Pair it with Suzhou Museum / Pingjiang Road area, not three separate gardens.
- Use metro, taxi or walking based on weather and crowd level.
- Return to Shanghai before the last comfortable train window.
Where To Stay
- Hangzhou: near West Lake east side for first-timers; near Longjing only if you want a quieter tea-focused stay.
- Suzhou: Gusu old city for gardens, canals and walking; Suzhou Industrial Park for modern hotels and business travel.
- Shanghai base: stay near People's Square, Jing'an or Hongqiao if doing early rail day trips.
