Hangzhou and Suzhou Travel Guide

Hangzhou and Suzhou are the best soft add-ons to Shanghai. Use high-speed rail, choose one main scenic focus per day, and avoid trying to see both cities fully in one rushed day.

Suggested stay: 1-3 nights Best from: Shanghai Hongqiao Best style: slow day trips

Quick Answer

High-Speed Rail Plan

Route Typical time Best use
Shanghai -> Hangzhou About 45-75 minutes by fast train West Lake day trip or one-night city break.
Shanghai -> Suzhou About 25-45 minutes by fast train Garden and canal day trip.
Hangzhou -> Suzhou Often 1.5-2.5 hours depending on train and station Useful for a 3-day Shanghai-Hangzhou-Suzhou loop.

Hangzhou West Lake Route

  1. Arrive by train, then metro/taxi toward the West Lake east side. Longxiangqiao is a practical lakeside metro reference point.
  2. Walk the east/north lake edge first for an easy first impression.
  3. If weather is clear, add a boat or causeway walk; if rainy, use cafes, museums or tea-house time.
  4. Add Longjing / Meijiawu tea area only if you have enough afternoon time and a clear return plan.
  5. Return to the correct rail station with buffer time; Hangzhou has multiple stations.

Suzhou Garden Route

  1. Arrive at Suzhou Railway Station if possible for old-city access.
  2. Start with Humble Administrator's Garden at No.178 Dongbei Street, Gusu District, or another major garden with current ticket availability.
  3. Pair it with Suzhou Museum / Pingjiang Road area, not three separate gardens.
  4. Use metro, taxi or walking based on weather and crowd level.
  5. Return to Shanghai before the last comfortable train window.
