Shanghai Travel Guide for First-Time Visitors
Shanghai is the easiest China landing city for many visitors: two major airports, strong metro coverage, foreign-card transport improvements, and fast day trips to Suzhou and Hangzhou.
Quick Answer
- Best first hotel area: People's Square for central convenience, Jing'an for restaurants and calmer hotels, the Bund for views, Xintiandi for nightlife.
- Do not skip: the Bund, Yu Garden area, French Concession / Xintiandi, one skyline viewpoint if weather is clear.
- Best add-ons: Suzhou gardens or Hangzhou West Lake by high-speed rail.
- Transport style: metro first, taxi/Didi for luggage, Maglev or Airport Link depending on airport and hotel area.
Airport To City
| Airport | Best route | Use case |
|---|---|---|
| Pudong Airport (PVG) | Metro Line 2 for budget travel; Maglev to Longyang Road for the experience and speed; Airport Link Line if crossing toward Hongqiao. | PVG handles many international flights. Choose hotel area before deciding rail versus taxi. |
| Hongqiao Airport (SHA) | Metro Line 2 or Line 10 connects Hongqiao to central Shanghai. Hongqiao Railway Station is part of the same transport hub area. | Best for domestic flights and day trips by high-speed rail. |
Shanghai official guidance confirms foreign-card acceptance has improved across metro service centers and public transport payment channels. Still, set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before arrival as a backup.
Where To Stay
| Area | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| People's Square / Nanjing Road | First-timers, metro access, Bund walks, shopping. | Busy and commercial. |
| Jing'an | Good hotels, restaurants, metro, balanced city access. | Not as scenic as the Bund. |
| The Bund | Views, premium hotels, first-night impact. | Higher prices and traffic around peak hours. |
| Xintiandi / Former French Concession | Cafes, nightlife, walkable neighborhoods. | Some attractions require metro or taxi. |
| Hongqiao | Early trains, business travel, late domestic flights. | Less ideal for classic sightseeing. |
3-Day First Shanghai Route
Day 1: Arrival + Bund
Check in, test payment apps, then walk Nanjing Road to the Bund near sunset. If jet lag is strong, keep dinner near the hotel.
Day 2: Old City + Modern Skyline
Morning around Yu Garden and old-city streets, afternoon in People's Square or a museum, evening in Lujiazui or the Bund depending on weather.
Day 3: French Concession Or Day Trip
Choose an easy local day around Xintiandi, Tianzifang and tree-lined streets, or take a high-speed train to Suzhou or Hangzhou.
Suzhou And Hangzhou Day Trips
- Suzhou: go to Suzhou Railway Station if your main targets are old-city gardens and Suzhou Museum. Plan one major garden, one museum/old street, and one canal walk.
- Hangzhou: go to Hangzhou East for train frequency, or Hangzhou Station when available for West Lake proximity. Start around Longxiangqiao / lakeside and avoid overfilling the day.
- Booking tip: book weekend trains early and keep the return station clear in your calendar.
Food Route
Use area clusters: breakfast or dumplings near People's Square, xiaolongbao and snacks around Yu Garden, modern Chinese or international restaurants in Jing'an/Xintiandi, and a skyline dinner only if the weather is clear enough to justify the price.
