Itinerary
3 Days in Shanghai Itinerary
Shanghai is the best first China landing city if you want easy metro, food, hotels and skyline payoff. Use one day for old/new Shanghai, one day for culture and neighborhoods, and one day for Suzhou or Hangzhou.
Quick Answer
- Day 1: arrive, hotel, Nanjing Road or People's Square, Bund night view.
- Day 2: Yu Garden old city plus Pudong/Lujiazui or museum plan.
- Day 3: choose Suzhou or Hangzhou by high-speed rail from Shanghai.
- Best base: People's Square, Jing'an, Huangpu or a clean metro-connected hotel.
Day-By-Day Plan
| Day | Morning | Afternoon | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrive, hotel check-in, Alipay/eSIM test. | Nanjing Road or People's Square light walk. | The Bund and optional Huangpu River cruise. |
| Day 2 | Yu Garden ticketed garden and old-city bazaar. | Lujiazui / Pudong skyline, museum or observation deck if booked. | Jing'an, Xintiandi or a river-view dinner area. |
| Day 3 | High-speed rail from Shanghai Hongqiao to Suzhou or Hangzhou. | One-city focus: Suzhou garden/canal or Hangzhou West Lake. | Return to Shanghai with rail buffer. |
Choose Suzhou Or Hangzhou
- Suzhou: easier short day trip, gardens, canals, old streets. Best if you want less rail time.
- Hangzhou: West Lake, tea areas, softer scenery. Best if you can accept a longer day or one-night add-on.
- Do not: try to do both Suzhou and Hangzhou fully in one day.
Transport Notes
- Use metro for most central routes. Shanghai stations have English signage, but transfers can be long.
- Use taxi/Didi for late nights, heavy luggage and airport arrivals after a long flight.
- For day trips, confirm whether your train leaves from Shanghai Hongqiao, Shanghai Station, or another station before going to the wrong side of the city.
