First-Time China Travel Guide

For a first China trip, do not start with a giant bucket list. Start with a working arrival system: entry, payments, internet, hotel check-in, trains, and a route that does not punish you every morning.

Quick Start Checklist

  1. Confirm whether you need a visa, visa-free entry, or visa-free transit.
  2. Install Alipay and WeChat before departure, then add a backup card and cash plan.
  3. Prepare internet access: eSIM, roaming, or local SIM.
  4. Book your first two nights at a hotel that can handle passport check-in.
  5. Choose 2-3 cities, not 6 cities, for a one-week first trip.
  6. Book major attractions early, especially the Palace Museum and high-demand museums.
  7. Use high-speed rail between nearby cities and flights for long jumps.
